Boiler Upgrade Scheme boost (for some!) - Yorkshire Heat Pumps

For homes with an oil or LPG heating system the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant has been boosted from £7,500 to £9,000, but for a limited time only.

If you're considering switching from fossil fuel heating to an energy efficient 'green' heating system, now might be the perfect time.

From 21st July 2026 until 4th April 2027 the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant is being increased from £7,500 to £9,000 for properties that are currently heated using oil or LPG when installing an air-to-water heat pump or ground source heat pump. This change has been introduced to support homeowners most heavily affected by the spikes in fuel costs resulting from the war in Iran.

Homes that are heated using other fossil fuels - gas or electricity - are still eligible for a grant, but at the lower level of £7,500. Funding for this grant has been extended through to 2028.

The UK government has promoted the grant uplift with a TV campaign and leaflet doordrop across England and Wales, featuring some 'warm and fuzzy' knitted characters. This has resulted in a flurry of inquires here at Yorkshire Heat Pumps in recent days. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme, introduced in 2022 was the successor to the ill-fated Green Homes Grant Scheme and before that, the more generous and successful Renewable Heat Incentive scheme. These are all initiatives aimed at supporting the UK's path to Net Zero emissions.

The enhanced Boiler Upgrade Scheme is the first to receive such a high level of marketing support which we hope will drive uptake of energy-efficient renewable energy heating that, in the long term, will be good for both the environment and homeowners' bank accounts. However, the persistently high cost of electricity has made heat pumps more costly to run than they were when the first incentive scheme was introduced in 2014, but we do hope to see electricity prices come back down soon.
